Greetings,

I have either a really big or really tiny object loaded into Maya; it
shows up in the outliner/HG window. When I select nodes, they appear
briefly and then disappear (view is zoomed/centered on obj). Am sure
this has something to do with fov/window settings, but so far nothing
I have played with has made any difference: near/far clip planes, fov
settings. I know the object is in the workspace, just can't see it in
the camera views! Help!

Thanks!

If you have been playing with the camera attributes and this is the problem.
Then creating another perspective camera should not have this problem.
At the top of the perspective pane: Select.: Panels->perspective->new
You have created "persp1" camera with default attributes.
If this is the problem, then just delete your persp node in the Outliner
and rename persp1 to persp.

If you still have a problem and it is software related (not your video card)
Then you can try resetting your user preferences, this is a generic fix
for some Maya quirks.
( with Maya NOT running.)
In C:\My Documents\maya\ (6.5,7,8 ...) \prefs\ directory
Find userPrefs.mel and rename it "userPrefs.melX".
Then start Maya, a new set of defaults and a new userPrefs.mel are
generated. If it doesn't help, then closed down Maya, delete userPrefs.mel
again and rename .melX back to .mel to restore you old settings.
